Pearl Y. Brokofsky, 88, of Grand Island died Friday, May 23, 2014, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at Apfel Funeral Home with the Rev. Lonnie Logan officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell, NE.
Visitation will be 4-6 Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at the Apfel Funeral Home, Grand Island, NE.
Pearl Brokofsky was born February 24, 1926, at Ainsworth, NE to Amos and Emily (Ogden) Gudgel. She grew up and attended school in Ainsworth graduating from Ainsworth High School.
Pearl married Melvin Brokofsky on June 4, 1944, at Ainsworth. They made their home in Ainsworth where they owned and operated Mels Repair Shop. They retired in 1968 and moved to Grand Island in 1971.
Pearl was a member of the United Congregational Church since 1946. She was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary and the DAV Auxiliary. She was a member of the N.O.A.C. and served as president of VFW Auxiliary Post 7849. She was then president of District 11 of the VFW Auxiliary. She served nine years as a volunteer at the VAMC and as a VAVS representative for the DAV Auxiliary.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Linda Brokofsky of Lincoln, NE and Roderick and Ellen Brokofsky of Papillion, NE; one brother, Jack Gudgel of Bayard, Nebraska,; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Ida Belle and Laverne Fernau of Nampa, ID, Sherril and Robert Herschiser of Kansas and Sharron and Dean Jochem of Ainsworth; three grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one great great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Melvin in 2010; and five brothers and one grandchild.
Memorials are suggested to United Congregational Church, Grand Island, NE.
