Peggy A. O'Brien, 77, of Grand Island, died Saturday, September 19, 2015 at the Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.



Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, September 25, 2015 at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Grand Island with Rev. Michael McDermott officiating. Interment will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.



Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. Thursday at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island with a Wake Service to follow at 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.



Peggy was born on May 12, 1938 at Okmulgee, Oklahoma the daughter of William A. and Frankie L. (Simpson) Aggas. Owing to the premature death of her mother Frankie within weeks of Peggys birth, she was raised by her father and stepmother Lorraine A. (Pagels) Aggas. She graduated from St. Anthonys High School in Okmulgee in 1956 and attended the College of St. Marys in South Bend, Indiana, receiving her Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education in 1960. She then furthered her education by receiving a Masters Degree in Guidance Counseling from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio in 1967.



She was united in marriage to Jerry D. OBrien on July 30, 1960 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. They made their first home in Springfield, Ohio, moved to Dayton, Ohio in 1963, and eventually settled in Grand Island in 1968.

Besides raising her five children, Peggy enjoyed oil painting, crocheting and quilting.



She was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, Prairie Pioneer Quilt Guild and was a friend of Bill W.



Survivors include her son Michael and wife Lynne OBrien and their children Patrick, Sean, Rosemary and Neil, son Mark and wife Rose Marie OBrien and their children Kaylee, Alyssa, Nicole and Jonathan, daughter Megan and husband Mike Mahan and their children Ryan and Andrew, daughter Mary and husband John Spain and children Sam and Christopher, and daughter Melissa and husband Rob Monaghan and children Amanda McWhinney and Elizabeth McWhinney; one sister Betty Lou Taff.



Also surviving are nephews Larry Taff, Roger Taff, Jim OBrien, Steve OBrien, nieces Shari (Taff) Allison and Maureen (OBrien) Weber.

She was preceded in death by her parents William and Frankie, stepmother, Lorraine, and husband, Jerry.
