Peggy J. Racek, 88, of Grand Island, formerly of Wood River died April 5, 2019, at Bickford Assisted Living in Grand Island. A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held from 12-3 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2019 at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. Memorials suggested to the Wood River Fire & Rescue Department. Peggy was born on Aug 20, 1930, in North Bend, NE, to William and Katheryn (Sellhorn) Rohde. She grew up in North Bend; graduated in 1947 from North Bend High School and received her teaching certificate. Peggy taught in country school from 1947 to 1950.
She was united in marriage to Ed Racek on May 1950. The couple resided in North Bend, Silver Creek, Wood River, and Dalton. Peggy worked most of her career in bookkeeping at numerous locations. She retired from Cargill in 1992. Peggy was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Christian Motorcycle Association, United Methodist Church, and American Legion Auxiliary as well as being a volunteer at Cheyenne County Fair, and Senior Citizens. She enjoyed camping, sewing, and machine embroidery, traveling, family, and flowers.
Peggy is survived by: sons: Robert (Renee) Racek of Omaha, Ross (Kathy) Racek of Bedford, TX; daughter: Patty (Gary) Camp of Wood River; son-in-law: Bruce Ernest of Dalton; grandchildren: RJ (Sarah) Racek, Kassie (Amit) Chanda, Bryce (Alyssha) Racek, Ryan (Tiearra) Camp, and Shane (Dawn) Ernest; three great-grandchildren: Alexander and Isaac Racek, Mya Chanda; sister: Kathleen (Joe) Lodl, sisters-in-law: JoAnn Rohde, Margret Wielgus, and Jean Peck.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, daughter: Pamela (Racek) Ernest, infant son: Billy Racek, brother: Ross Rohde, brothers-in-law: Lloyd Racek, Andy Wielgus, Eddie Peck, and sister-in-law: Gertie Racek.
