Phimmasone Sengsom

Phimmasone “Sone” Sengsom passed on Friday, May 28, 2021, at Clarkson Tower at Nebraska Medical Center at the age of 65.



Funeral services will be at 12 PM Saturday, June 5, 2021, at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM Friday, June 4th at Apfel Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the family in care of the funeral home.



Sone was born on October 10, 1955, in Thakhek, Khammouan, Laos to Tan and Oudom (Phommasack) Keochanhthala. She was a farmer’s daughter and was the eldest child. She grew up in Laos and moved to Thailand in 1979.



March 7, 1980, Sone was united in marriage to Somsay Sengsom in Thailand. The couple then moved to Santa Ana, California, on July 26, 1981. In 1986, the family settled in Grand Island, NE and made it their home where they raised their family. Sone worked at Monfort for 18 years before she retired.



Sone enjoyed taking her family on fishing trips in the summertime as well as working in her garden. She loved animals. She always had a pet dog and cat, and she would also make friends with the neighborhood squirrels. The wildlife around her always seemed to know she was their friend. She also had a great passion for cooking. Sone was an amazing cook. Cooking was her way of showering her family with love. A few other things that she enjoyed was playing cards with her friends and especially going on trips with her husband.



Sone is survived by her husband, Somsay; daughter, Katey “Nang” (Josh) Johnson; son, Viengkhone “Hum” Phanthavong; 3 sisters and 3 brothers; and many nieces and nephews.
