Richard L. Harder

Richard L. Harder, 69, of Grand Island passed away Monday, October 11, 2021, at CHI Health St. Francis, from cancer, with Carol and Jim at his side.



Cremation with private family services will be held at the Grand Island City Cemetery. Apfel Funeral Home is assisting the family.



Richard was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota on September 1, 1952, to Loyal and Alberta (Francisco) Harder. Richard was plant manager for Diamond Plastics and retired from Union Pacific Railroad in North Platte. Many happy hours were spent as a thoroughbred owner and trainer. Richard told one owner they had more winners circle pictures of him than his own mother had.



He is survived and totally loved by Carol Hiser for 30 years; brother Jim Harder and wife Mary with nephews, James and Matthew.



He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Mary Louise Harder.



Richard wanted to acknowledge at UNMC, Dr. Bhatt, Kim Miller, Tawney and Cecily that assisted his journey fiercely battling cancer for 13 years. He especially respected Dr. Isaac Berg, at GI Internal Medical, who allowed such compassionate and kind care. Richard requested any memorials be directed to the family for cancer research at UNMC.
