Richard Moffett, 81 died Friday April 8, 2016. Funeral Services will be Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 10:30 AM at Cairo United Methodist Church in Cairo with Rev. Cathryn Love officiating. Interment will be in Wood River Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 8 PM on Tuesday at the church. Memorials have been suggested to the Cairo United Methodist Church; the Tehama Shrine Center in Hastings or to the family for future designation. Apfel Funeral Home is serving the family.

Richard Wayne Moffett was born October 30, 1934 to Robert and Helen (McTavish) Moffett at Gibbon. He attended rural Gibbon school and graduated in May 1952 from Gibbon High School. While in school, he worked for Dick and Jessie Rogers, farming. He was discharged from the Nebraska National Guard on November 2, 1953 and then entered the United States Army and served from November 2 1953 until October 29, 1955. He was stationed at Ft. Thule in Greenland.

On March 30, 1956, he married Darlene D. Brittin in Wood River; to this marriage 3 daughters were born; Deb (Brad) Obermiller; Diane (Rick) Spiehs and Dixie (Todd) McCord. He farmed in the Wood River and Grand Island area and in 1971, he moved to Cairo to farm and raise cattle. He was a member of Cairo Masonic Lodge #324; the Tehama Shrine in Hastings where he drove a van for many children and their families to the Shriners Hospital in Rochester, MN. He was also an active 4-H leader and served with the Grand Island Rural Fire Department. In 2006, he moved to Regency Retirement in Grand Island, where he lived his remaining life.

Survivors include, daughters, Deb (Brad) Obermiller; Diane (Rick) Spiehs and Dixie (Todd) McCord; grandchildren, Kassie (Steve) Hancock; Jason (Ginney) Spiehs; Jeff (Randie) Spiehs; Jessica Jacobsen; Lacey McCord; Dustin (Renee) McCord; and Peyton McCord; 7 great-grandchildren; his sister, Delores (Jerry) Svoboda; sister in law, Denise Moffett; sister in law, Jeanette Dean; uncle, Carl Moffett; aunt, Dot Allen; aunt, Sylvia McTavish; 5 nieces; 3 nephews and special friend, Thelma Scheidies. He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene; parents; brother, Robert G. Moffett as well as numerous aunts and uncles.
