Hastings resident, Robert William Zalman, 88 passed away Saturday, March 31, 2018 at Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare, Hastings.
Services will be Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 1:30pm at First St. Pauls Lutheran Church Hastings, NE with Pastor Joel Remmers officiating. Burial will be at Parkview Cemetery with Military rites by Veterans Services of Hastings and Masonic Rites, Hastings. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 4, 2018 from 4 pm to 7 pm with the family present at Apfel Funeral Home, Hastings.
Memorials may be given to First St. Pauls Lutheran Church or Shriners Hospital for Children.
Robert was born January 20, 1930 to Ernest Frederich and Farrie Iris (Ball) Zalman in Hastings, NE. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1947 then attended Hastings College for two years. He served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1952, in the Korean War, aboard U.S.S. Lyman K Swenson DD 729. Robert was a U.S. Navy Seaman First Class. He was honorably discharged on April 5, 1952. He was united in marriage to Sheila Ann Reiners on October 24, 1954 at First St Pauls Lutheran Church in Hastings, NE. He worked for Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Company from 1952- 1990. Robert retired August 17, 1990 but returned in 1991 as a Consultant for K N Energy.
He was a member of First St. Pauls Lutheran Church, Grand Lodge A.F. & A. M., Midwest Lodge #317, Hastings, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry S.J. USA Valley, Hastings, Orient of NE, Tehama Shriners, former DeMolay Dad, Past President Lions Club from 1980 to 1981, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 592, Hastings, American Legion Post 0011, Hastings and the LaDanza Dance Club.
Robert especially enjoyed vacationing at the family rustic cabin in the Rocky Mountains of Northern Colorado.
Robert was married for 63 years to his wife Sheila and they were blessed with three children, Shelley Ann Brandon of Chapin, SC, William Jay (Kerri) Zalman of Saint Johns, FL and Kipp Robert (Connie) Zalman of Hastings, 10 grandchildren, Dr. Wade (Lynsey) Verch of Chapin, SC, Drew Brandon of South Asia, Scott Brandon of Sylvania, OH, Noah Brandon of Chapin, SC, Chad Gulzow of Durham, NC, Dr. Brittanie (Jim) Lockard of San Antonio, TX, Paige (Mike) Zalman of Morgantown, WV, Katie and Sadie Parsons of Saint Johns, FL, Hannah Zalman of Hastings and three great grandchildren, Mason and Jackson Lockard of San Antonio, TX and Faelyn Verch of Chapin, SC and special cousin Helen Magee of CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, Claire Lorraine Zalman, Father and Mother In Law, Walter and Gertrude Reiners, son in law, Larry Brandon, infant granddaughter, Zoey Zalman, brother and sister in law, Bill and Marlita Burnham, nephews, Scott Burnham and Scott Stramel, step brother, Perry Long and step sister, Viola Long.
