Rodney L. Burnett Sr., 73, of Grand Island died June 29, 2018, at his home surrounded by family. Funeral service will be 2:30 PM Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at Apfel Funeral Home with Derek Apfel officiating. Burial will follow at the Grand Island City Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Monday at the Apfel Funeral Home.
Rodney was born September 16, 1944, in Central City, NE, to Boyd and Erma (Compton) Burnett. He grew up in Grand Island and attended school there. At age 17, he enlisted in the US Army and served 9 years. During that time he met his first wife Peggy Moore. They had four children: Stacey, Rodney Jr., Jamie, and Stephen. They later divorced, and he married Debra Callihan. They had daughter: Wendy and added two step children: Michael and Christopher. Later he married Doris. Rodney moved back to Grand Island in 2011.
Rodney loved to fish and ride motorcycles. But his first love was spending time with his family.
Survivors include wife: Doris of Adel, GA; children: Stacey Burnett of Grand Island, Rodney Burnett, Jr. of Columbus, NE, Jamie Burnett of Lincoln, NE, Stephen (Adrienne) Burnett of Omaha, NE, Wendy Hoss (Clifford) Shafer of Grand Island, Michael Hoss of Grand Island, Christopher Callihan of Lincoln, NE; 22 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; brother: Sunny Burnett of SD; and step-brother: Buck (Babe) of SD.
He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother: Bertha Burnett; sisters: Bev Ruppercht and Gloria Stoltenberg.
