Ronald L. Sawyer

Grand Island

Ronald L. Sawyer (Ron) died April 25, 2024 at home.  He was born June 3, 1963 in Tilden, Nebraska to Wayne and Edith Sawyer.  He lived in Norfolk, Nebraska until moving with his family to Grand Island, NE. He was a 1981 graduate of Grand Island Senior High.  

He worked various places and in 1989 began working at FSI (Filter Specialists Incorporated) in Grand Island, NE.


He was a welder with FSI until the plant was closed in 2020.  He then attended CCC and earned his Associates Degree in welding.  Shortly after his graduation he started getting ill and in 2023 with diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s) disease. Ron enjoyed taking on small welding jobs and woodworking at his home.


He loved to go fishing at L.E. Ray Lake in Grand Island and Mormon Island State Park where he practiced catch and release…mainly because he couldn’t stand eating fish. Ron was the proud recipient of many Master Angler awards.


Ron was proceeded in death by his parents, Wayne and Edith Sawyer, sister-in-law, Janice Sawyer. He is survived by his brothers Randy, Kearney, NE, Roger, LaVista, NE, Rod and Linda, Independence, IA, Russ and Janet, Ewing, NE, and nieces and nephews: Abigail and Jeff Oxley, Thornton, CO., Allison and Josh Loughry, Kearney, NE, Leticia Sawyer and Brian Chamis, Tequesta, Fl., James and Bobbi Sawyer, Val Rico, Fl., Cheryl Sawyer, Omaha, NE, Joseph Sawyer, Norfolk, NE and numerous great nieces and nephews along with a host of friends.


Memorial services will be held at L. E. Ray Lake in Grand Island on May 25, 2024, at 2 P.M. followed by a reception at his home.
