Roy Cadwalader

Roy D. Cadwalader, 90, of Grand Island, died Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at CHI St. Francis in Grand Island.



Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 10, 2018 at the Apfel Funeral Home with the Reverend Lonnie Logan officiating. Visitation will be Friday, 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later time.



Roy was born on March 29, 1927 in Loup City, NE, the son of Walter and Daisy (Fletcher) Cadwalader. He grew up in Grand Island. He entered the United States Navy on April 11, 1944 and served during WWII, he was honorably discharged on May 23, 1946. Roy was a bus driver for Greyhound Bus Depot when he met the love of his life, Mary Wanitschke. She was a waitress at the Jamison Caf where he would stop on his routes. They were united in marriage on May 21, 1955 in Aurora, the couple then made their home in Grand Island. Roy was employed by the Grand Island Fire Department, a long time truck driver for Nelson-Peterson, and then for Briggs. He worked for the Bureau of Reclamation, retiring in 1990. He later served as a crossing guard for Gates Elementary School in Grand Island.



He was a member of the VFW, Platt Duetsche, Liederkranz, Saddle Club, American Legion and Teamsters. Roy was a skilled carpenter, loved a good game of cards and helping his neighbors. He enjoyed the horse races, taking care of his yard, Nebraska sports, and most importantly, his grandchildren.



Those left to cherish his memory include his two daughters: Janet (Stephen) Griffin of Grand Island and Jennifer Cadwalader of Grand Island; two grandchildren: Cass (Tom) Didier of Lincoln, NE and Casey (Brionne) Griffin of Grant, NE; one great-grandchild: Caylieh Griffin; brother, Bert Cadwalader of Bountiful, UT.; sister, Alvina Blanche Kissler of Casper, WY.; and numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law & cousins.



He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, great-grandson August F. Didier, sisters; Edna, Evelyn, Mary, Dorothy and Lillian; brothers, Milford and Fred.
