Ruth Jelinek

Ruth Jelinek , 86, of Burwell, formerly of Grand Island died Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at Community Memorial Heath Center, Burwell, NE.



Services will be at 10:30 A.M. Monday at Apfel Funeral Home Funeral Home with the Rev. Trudy Kenyon Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Grand Island Cemetery. Visitation hours will be from 4 to 6 P.M. Sunday at the Apfel Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date.



Ruth was born July 24, 1930 in Loup City, Nebraska the daughter of Edward W. & Sophia C. (Schwaderer) Scherzberg. She attended school at Sherman County District 4 and Loup City High School, graduating in the class of 1947.



Ruth was united in marriage to Arnold A. Jelinek on August 27, 1948 in Steinhauer, Nebraska. The couple lived on the Jelinek family farm near Farwell, Nebraska, later moving to Grand Island in 1953. Her love for flowers and plants led to jobs at Lewis Greenhouse, Lewis Greenscape and Plant Island.



Ruth & Arnold loved spending time at their cabin near the Calamus Lake in Garfield County, Nebraska where they enjoyed fishing, boating and playing golf. She loved camping, playing cards with friends and family, making quilts, knitting and gardening. Arnold preceded her in death January 20, 2016.



She was a long time member of Faith United Methodist Church and a gold star member of Ruth Circle, She also volunteered with Cub Scouts and 4-H clubs. Ruth loved music and singing hymns.



Survivors of her immediate family include two daughters & sons-in-law, Linda & David Winkler of Burwell, Nebraska, Kristi & Patrick Hendrickx of Butler, Minnesota, son & daughter-in-law, Charles & Linda Jelinek of Burwell, Nebraska, She is also survived by eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Arnold, sister and two brothers-in-law.
