Sally Kay Husen, 71, of Grand Island died Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at her home.
She was born on Sept. 16, 1949, in Alliance, NE to Allen and Verlene (Witham) Zikmund. She grew up in Alliance, Grand Island, and Kearney and received her education at Kearney High School and KSC, where she was a cheerleader and member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and a Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology. She taught at Nebraska high schools and became an adjunct faculty member at UNK and Central Community College. Sally was a member of the Governor’s Council on Health Promotion and Physical Fitness.
She was united in marriage to Steven Husen on June 7, 1987, at Grand Island. Survivors include her husband, Steve; sons, Jack (Nickie) Melson of Glenwood, IA, Jeremy (Andrea) Husen of Gretna, NE, and Tim (Emily) Husen of Suwanee, GA; daughter Kate (Dan) Horton of Manhattan, IL.
Grandchildren are Emerson, Hudson and Harper Husen; Colette Husen; Claire and Jay Horton.
Sally is survived by her brother, Jim (Vicki) Zikmund and sister, Sue (Paul) Pocock.
A private family service was provided by Apfel Funeral Home of Grand Island.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites memorial contributions be made to: The University of Nebraska Foundation in memory of Sally (Zikmund) Husen. A special scholarship fund for the College of Education is being established in her name.
