Sandra Kay Benson

Sandra K. Benson, 78, of Grand Island, NE passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at Emerald Nursing Home in Grand Island, NE. As per her wishes she was cremated. A Memorial Service will be at Apfel Funeral Home on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 10:30 A.M. A gathering of friends and family will be held an hour prior to the start of the service at Apfel Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date. Sandra was born on September 28, 1945, at Grand Island, NE to Leonard and Margaret (Specht) Gerrard. She received her education from Grand Island Public Schools. In her younger years she enjoyed fishing, camping, listening to the oldies and country music. She also enjoyed arts and crafts, which she made and gave to family and friends. 

Sandra married Dennis Benson on September 10, 1965. They made their home in Grand Island, NE. She was a home-maker and would help out her husband at times with his roofing business. Sandra also worked part-time at AC Laundry, she baby-sat, and was a care giver.

She is survived by her son, Timothy (Leanna) Benson; her granddaughter whom she helped raise, Tori (Oscar) Hernandez; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister: Darla (Robert) Munoz; like a sister, Sharon (Eddie) Polanco of North Platte, NE; sister-in-law, Glenda (Bruce) Rodabaugh of Marquette, NE; Brothers-in-law: Gary Benson of Milford, NE and Roger Benson of Grand Island, NE.

Sandra was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis; parents; daughter, Gina Cortez; sisters-in-law: Lela Benson and Marilyn Muzil; and nephews: Bobby and Mitchel Munoz.
