Shirley A. Bruhn, 82, of Grand Island passed away Tuesday, November 20, 2018, surrounded by her loved ones, at Bryan Health East in Lincoln.
Private graveside services will take place Saturday, December 1st at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Edgar Schambach will officiate. Following the graveside service, a public reception will be held at 11:30 A.M. the Apfel Funeral Home for all to attend.
Memorials are suggested to the family to designate at a later date.
Shirley Ann (Woodruff) Bruhn was born June 11, 1936, at Grand Island to Elmer W. and Marie (Willman) Woodruff.
Shirley grew up and received her education in Grand Island graduating from Grand Island Senior High School in 1954. She continued her education at Kearney State Teacher’s College earning her Bachelor of Arts degree.
Shirley met Robert “Bob” Bruhn in late 1957. After being courted by Bob for one year, she accepted his proposal of marriage in December of 1958. The couple was wed on June 11th, 1961, in Grand Island.
Shirley was a teacher in the Grand Island Public Schools for 33 years. She taught elementary classes at Jefferson, Wasmer and West Lawn schools.
She was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church. Shirley also was a member of the Platt Duestche, Alpha Delta Kappa and held a Life Membership in Nebraska PTA.
She enjoyed participating in several card clubs, playing bingo, reading and participating in the Primrose handbell choir.
She is survived by four children; Susan (Troy) Lauver, of Lincoln, NE, Julie Bruhn of Grand Island, NE, Jodie Bjorkman, of Hickman, NE and Jon Bruhn of Grand Island, NE., five grandchildren: Jamie and husband Eric Dimmitt, Steven Bergmeier, Samantha Bjorkman, Joshua Bjorkman, and Chase Lauver; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert in 2013, brother, Bob Woodruff; sisters-in-law, Nina Woodruff and Irene Dunbar; and a special cousin, Nancy Demuth.
