Terry P. Gallagher, 76 of Cairo, Nebraska died Sunday, August 26, 2018 at his home in Cairo.
Memorial service will be Thursday August 30, 2018, 10:30 a.m. at Cairo United Methodist Church with the Rev. Cathryn Love officiating. Family requests in memory of Terry, to please dress comfortably. The family will be receiving family and friends 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Cairo Quick Response Team (QRT) and the Fire Department for scholarship use. Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Terry P. Gallagher was born March 6, 1942 in Fort Smith, Arkansas the son of John “Jack” & Velda (Kemper) Gallagher. He grew up in O’Neill, Nebraska where he received his education graduating from St. Mary’s Catholic School with the class of 1961.
He entered the United States Air Force in August 7, 1961 serving during Vietnam and was honorably discharged December 23,1964. He was united in marriage to Rita Pease, January 15, 1971 in Grand Island. The couple made their home in Cairo, Nebraska where he was employed at Baasch & Sons Welding of Cairo, NE as a welder, retiring in 1995. He also was a part time EMS instructor at Central Community College, in Grand Island for 33 years.
He was a member of Cairo Fire Department, Quick Response Team, Emergency Management Director for Cairo Fire District, Commander of the American Legion Post #333, NEMSA, Nebraska Instructor Society, Nebraska Advanced Care Providers, NEMSA EMS Winter Conference, National Association for EMT’S, State EMS Instructor, Hall County LEPC. Also a former board member for Centura Public Schools.
He enjoyed fishing, boating, reading, traveling, storm spotting, spending time with his grandchildren, and helping others. Terry loved having coffee in the mornings while visiting with fellow members of the community.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Rita Gallagher of Cairo, son, Todd M. Gallagher of Burwell, NE; daughter & son-in-law, Tammy & Tom Work of Grand Island, NE; daughter-in-law, Patty Pedroza of Hastings, NE. Two grandsons, Alex & Max Gallagher both of Hastings, NE, two granddaughters, Avery R. Work and Raven G. Work of Grand Island, NE; two brothers & sisters-in-law, Lynn & Liz Gallagher of Scottsdale, AZ, and David & Linda Winkler of Burwell, NE; two sisters-in-law, Millie Winkler of Broken Bow, NE, Judy Winkler of Lincoln, NE; two sisters & brothers-in-law, Rita & Ray Jenkins of Hesperia, CA, and Paula & Keith Burns of Gretna, NE; multiple nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Velda Gallagher; step-father George Winkler; son, Ken Gallagher; brothers, Duane and Gene Winkler; sister and brother-in-law Jeanette & Rick Zoucha; sister-in-law & spouse Joan & LeRoy Faith.
