Vera was born October 10, 1921 to Carl and Mable (Thiel) Yurk Sr in Hastings, NE. She was the oldest of four children. She attended Hastings public schools and graduated from Senior High in 1940. During her growing up years, she helped her parents with the restaurant business and developed her musical skills. She played piano, accordion and organ (all by ear). She married Max Brown in September 1941, and their only child Barbara was born in November 1942. They moved to Lexington NE where Max managed the radio station and Vera was a stay-at-home mom. Following Maxs death in 1950, Vera became a radio personality with a talk and music show, sharing local news and her musical talent with piano and accordion. After Barbara graduated and went off to nursing school, Vera moved back to Hastings. There she met and married Martin Berry Winsor on October 1967. She worked part-time at the Gift House at the Mall, and was so much a people person. When poor health prevailed upon her mother and her husband, she diligently cared for both of them in her home. When they were both gone, she became greatly involved in the Golden Friendship Center, tremendously enjoying her work as a volunteer and again sharing that beautiful music that only she could make. After moving to Goldbeck Towers several years ago, she was active in the volunteer program there and loved accompanying several musical groups, as well as playing for Vespers on a regular basis. When she moved to Missouri, she maintained a staunch support of the cornhuskers, always wearing her Go Big Red on game day. She had moved from Goldbeck Towers to be with her daughter in Cameron MO in early 2010 after being diagnosed with cancer. She died at Cameron Regional Medical Center in the loving arms of her daughter, and was attended for the last three weeks of her life by caring and compassionate staff at the hospital who got to enjoy her kindness and her great sense of humor. She was never afraid of death, knowing that she would see the lights of glory and be reunited with her parents, her husband, and her youngest brother who preceded her. She believed that her music was a gift from God, and was always ready and willing to share. She was a member of First St Pauls Lutheran Church, and had received many awards and recognition for her volunteer work, including Volunteer of the Year. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara York (and Phoebe), of Cameron MO; two brothers, Carl and wife Evelyn of Hastings and David and wife Bonnie of Omaha; A sister-in-law Betty Yurk of Hastings; nieces, nephews and cousins; and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Max, her husband Berry, her brother Henry and her most loved son-in-law John.
