Hastings resident, Virgil Bud Dwight Peterson, 95, passed away Friday, February 6, 2015 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital, Hastings.
Services will be Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at 10 am at the First St. Pauls Lutheran Church, Hastings with Pastor Joel Remmers officiating. Burial will be in the Glenvil Cemetery, Glenvil, NE. Visitation will be Monday, February 9, 2015 from 2 pm to 6 pm at the Apfel Funeral Home, Hastings. Condolences may be sent to the family from www.apfelfuneralhome.com. Apfel Funeral Home, Hastings is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials may be given to the Feed the Sheep program at First St. Pauls Lutheran Church, Hastings.
Bud was born January 26, 1920 in Phelps County, NE to Bernard and Mabel (Johnson) Peterson. He graduated from the Mascot school system in 1938. He served in the United States Army during WWII from December 1942 to January 1946. During his service he was stationed in Mew Guinea, the Philippines, Newcastle and Sydney, Australia.
In 1946 to 1949 Bud operated a garage with his brother-in-law in Holbrook. He then worked for Turling Construction Co. in Superior, NE. He married Inez Ellermeier in 1953. In 1956 they moved to Glenvil, NE and Bud worked for Sidles CO, in Hastings. He later managed the Farmers Coop in Glenvil and also served as the town mayor. In 1962 they moved to Bertrand where Bud was parts manager at John Deere Implements. In 1963 he accepted a job at Montgomery Ward in Hastings, working in the sporting goods dept. In 1966 he worked at Debus Bakery in the maintenance dept. retiring in 1982.
Bud spent many hours volunteering in the community. He delivered Meals on Wheels, was a funeral assistant at Brand-Wilson Mortuary, he helped organize entertainment programs at the Regional Center, and served in many capacities for many years at the local Lutheran churches he attended.
Inez passed away in 1989, Bud married Joyce Chapel in 1991.
Bud is survived by his wife Joyce of Hastings, his daughter, Shellie (Scott) Oglesby of Omaha, two step-sons, Myron (Sharon), of Hastings and Robert Peterson of Fort Collins CO, step-daughter, Dana (David) Vavra of Milligan, NE, one grandson and eight step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father, first wife Inez, two brothers and two sisters.
