Hastings resident Vivienne M. Olson, 100, died September 7, 2007 at her home at the Kensington, Hastings, NE. Services will be Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at 10:30 AM at the Grace United Methodist Church, Hastings, NE, with the Rev. Lee Wiggert officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, September 10, 2007 from 9 am to 9 PM at the Brand-Wilson Funeral Home and Cremation Service and 1 hour prior to service time at the church. Condolences may be sent to the family from www.brandwilson.com. Vivienne was born December 25, 1906 to Horace (Harry) P. And Grace A. (VanScoy) Mumey in Rockville, NE. During her Junior High and High School years she lived with her Aunt and Uncle James F. and Ethel Appling. She graduated from Hastings High in 1926. She worked at the Blue Valley Creamery during the summer of 1926 then in the fall she attended college at the Western Union in LeMars, Iowa. She graduated from college in 1930 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in English. She returned to Hastings after graduation. She taught school at Riverton, NE. She was a school teacher from 1930 to 1936. Vivienne then worked as a secretary for the Topaz Dairy. She married Howard Olson, December 25, 1939; he passed away May 14, 1987. After marriage Vivienne and her husband moved to Salina, Kansas. Howard then entered the military in 1942 serving during World War II, while Howard was gone Vivienne moved to Concordia, Kansas. She began a job with the Weather Bureau of the U.S. Department of Commerce, she was the first woman ever hired by the weather bureau she worked there for 4 years. In November 1946, Howard was stationed in Topeka, Kansas so Vivienne moved there to be with him where she worked at the State House, from 1953 to 1957. In 1957 they moved to Chicago. IL. In January 1976 Howard and Vivienne began going to Scottsdale, AZ for the 3 winter months the spring of 1982 was their last winter in Scottsdale. After Howards death she moved back to Hastings, NE in 1988. In March 2004 Vivienne moved to the Kensington, Hastings, NE. She was a member of the Grace Untied Methodist Church since 1923. She belonged to the sweet Adelines for 10 years. She was a member of the Adams County Historical Society, the One Time Choirs and Glee Club. She is survived by, 1 sister-in-law, Jane M. Olson of Fort White, FL. Nieces & nephews, Vicki Braunegal, of Longmont, CO and Megan Tedder of Fort White, FL, Connie Durfee and James Durfee both of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Michael Mumey and Susan Mumey of California and 1 cousin LaVeda Appling of North For Myers, FL. She is preceded in death by her husband Howard, her parents, and 2 sisters, Edith, and Genevieve, and 3 brothers Howard, Thomas, and Robert. Memorials may be given to the Grace Church Family Life Center.
