Walter J, Rasher, 89, of Grand Island died Thursday, July 2, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Society Grand Island.
Graveside services will be at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at the Grand Island City Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Scott Taylor will officiate.
Visitation will be from 9:00 to 10:30 A.M. Tuesday at the Apfel Funeral Home.
Walter was born August 31, 1925, at Bruning, Nebraska to Harry E. and Bessie V. ( Clifford) Rasher.
Walter grew up and received his education in Belvidere, Nebraska. He married Dorothy M. Dudgeon on January 15, 1949, at Hastings, NE. They lived in Belvidere until moving to Grand Island in 1951.
Walter entered the U.S. Army in November of 1943 and served until he was honorably discharged in April of 1946.
Walter worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. He later worked for Shafer Furnace Company, Brown Auto Supply and the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant. He joined the Nebraska Department of Roads in 1955 and worked there until his retirement in 1988.
Walter was a member of the First Christian Church of Grand Island.
He and Dorothy loved to travel. They went on several cruises, and saw many different parts of the world. He also loved to spend time on his computer and enjoyed collecting elephants.
Walter also loved to meet his best friend, Everett every weekend at a local McDonalds for coffee.
Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Patricia and Patrick Dinnel of Grand Island and Carol Ryll of Grand Island; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Jene Rasher of Grand Island; and four grandchildren, Sara Wajda, Melissa Dinnel, Alex and Alyssa Ryll.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; and one son, Gary Rasher.
Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date.
