Wesley W. Kensinger, 86, of Grand Island died Sunday, March 30, 2014, at Wedgewood Care Center.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Apfel Funeral Home. The Rev. Paul Canady will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors provided by the United Veterans Honor Guard and U.S. Navy Honors Team.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Apfel Funeral Home.
Wesley Warren Kensinger was born April 30, 1927, at Grand Island to Warren F. and Thelma (Ball) Kensinger. He grew up and received his education in the Grand Island Public Schools.
Wesley enlisted to serve during WWII with the U.S. Navy serving from 1945 to 1947 as a cook stationed at the Great Lakes Training Center.
Wesley married Alta Dean on August 16, 1947, at Grand Island. They made their home in Grand Island and Wesley worked for Brown Fruit Co. He later went to work as a meat cutter for Nash Finch (Jack and Jill) and went on to become meat department manager, retiring in 1997 after 38 years in that position. He then worked as meat buyer for Nash Finch.
Wesley was a member of the Evangelical Free Church, the Eagles, Platte Deutsch, the American Legion as well as the local rifle club and volunteered with the Special Olympics. He was also involved with the Studebaker Club and the National Rifle Association.
He enjoyed sports, Nebraska football and also traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Alta Kensinger of Grand Island; one son, Daniel Kensinger of Grand Island; one sister and three brothers-in-law, Dianna and Tom Dunning of Grand Island, Jack Wiese of Grand Island and Harold Beran of Apache Junction, AZ; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Doris Beran and Beatrice Wiese; and one nephew, John Wiese.
