Winona Pearl Fullerton was born November 19,1934 in Grand Island, NE to Goldie and David Johnson and was raised with two loving brothers Jerry and DuWayne. Winona grew up and attended school in Cairo, NE. Winona was married and to this union five children were born: Dennis, Kimberly, Dixie, Jerry, and Melanie. The family made their home in Wyoming, then later in Grand Island. Over the years, Winona made her home in Ravenna, Wood River and Grand Island. While in Grand Island, Winona lived at Chrysalis where she enjoyed cooking and baking for her friends and neighbors.
Winnie tirelessly waited tables at the well-known Dreisbach’s Steak House for over twenty years. She later worked at the Ravenna Good Samaritan Nursing Home helping to prepare meals. When Winona moved to Wood River, she took a position through the Foster Grandparent Program assisting students with their studies at Wood River Elementary where she was famously known as Grandma Winnie! This gentle, kind soul would become a mentor, friend, and teacher to many little people, as well as being a cherished grandma to her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Winona enjoyed listening to George Strait, polka music, attending auctions, bowling, playing dominos, going to the horse races, and cooking.
Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Dennis and Jerry, both of Colorado; daughters Dixie of Colorado, Kim of Florida, and Melanie of Hawaii; fifteen grandchildren and thirty great grandchildren; two brothers, Jerry Johnson of Gothenburg, NE and DuWayne Johnson of Malcolm, NE; several nieces and nephews who lovingly referred to her as Aunt Nonnie; as well as extended family and numerous friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, David Johnson and Goldie Vogt, and her stepfather “Papa Harry” Vogt.
